The Busy Mom’s Guide to Packing Light for Your Kids (with or without packing cubes)

Packing for a trip is exciting—until you have kids. Suddenly, you’re not just throwing a few outfits into a suitcase. You’re trying to remember favorite pajamas, extra shoes, snacks, medicine, comfort items, swimsuits, chargers, diapers, wipes, and somehow making sure nothing important gets left behind. It can feel overwhelming before the vacation even begins.

After traveling with my kids, I’ve learned that having a simple packing system makes all the difference. Instead of waiting until the night before and hoping I remembered everything, I use a repeatable process that helps me pack quickly, stay organized, and avoid those “I forgot…” moments once we arrive.
In this post, I’m sharing exactly how I pack my kids for a trip, and the organization tips that keep our suitcases neat from the day we leave until we get back home. Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway, a beach vacation, or a longer family adventure, these practical packing tips for kids will help you spend less time stressing over luggage and more time making memories together.

Why Packing Light For Your Kids Is Worth It

Why not just bring it all? Well, for most, it’s super overwhelming and frankly just way too much. I totally get the “What Ifs?” I am a chronic over thinker. However, I think there with my method there is a way to have everything you need but pack it all in one bag.

Packing in one bag logistically is so much easier as well. Each kid can carry their own backpack or when they are babies I pack them in my bag. If you are flying this saves so so much money as well. We either pack all in one checked bag or everyone in a backpack/personal item. For short weekend trips I pack all the kids in one duffle and then myself and hubby in our own weekender bags. This makes only three bags to keep track of which is great! You can read my post about how I pack for a 5 day vacation out of the country in a personal item HERE!

Packing light reduces the stress of remembering everything, making sure you are bringing everything home you took with you, and keeping your hotel or Air BNB less cluttered while you are there! Sound too good to be true? I’ve taken years and many trips mastering this and will share all my packing light tips and tricks below!

1. Choose the Right Luggage

Choosing the right luggage for the trip is important. It’s key to think through what you will be doing while you’re gone, what’s the weather going to be like, how long will you be gone etc.

If we are gone for just one night as a family I will often times pack all in one bag but two or more nights, everyone gets their own bag. I typically choose backpacks because it is easier for my boys to carry but you choose your favorite!

2. Start With a Packing List

After you obviously have the details of the trip planned now it’s time to make a packing list. Since I need the same thing for each kid (most times) I will just write each thing down with a box per kid next to it. This helps me keep things straight and not have to write the same thing 3 times. I will put a picture below of what I mean! I also have a ready to go “medicine bag” that I always bring that has:

  • Kids Ibuprofen
  • Benadryl
  • Laxative
  • Homeopathics
  • Eye Drops
  • Ear Drops
  • Cough Chest Rub
  • Vitamin C

This way if we are ever in a pinch we have the things we need immediately and anything else we can run our and buy if we absolutely have to! Now your list is made lets start packing!

3. Follow My Simple Clothing Formula and Plan Outfits

It’s important to plan outfits instead of just winging it. I typically pack one outfit per day and one extra outfit. If we have a few nights we will go out to eat I will pack an extra nice outfit or two. I have three boys and their day clothes will not look nice in any way after a full day of play and vacation!

  • one outfit per day
  • one extra outfit
  • one or two nice dinner outfits or outfit for event we are going to
  • one pair of jammies for every 2 nights we are gone
  • one pair of undies for every day
  • one pair of socks for every day
  • tennis shoe or croc and a nicer shoe or sandal
  • swimsuit if needed
  • jacket or coat depending on weather

4. Use Packing Cubes or Ziplock Bags

I love a good packing cube. I have some and use them very often, however, there are times I love to use a ziplock bag. Packing cubes are great but don’t allow you to divide by day. We recently went to Mexico for our honeymoon and left the boys for 5 days with family. I knew everything had to be packed perfectly as they were moving between grandparents and aunts and uncles.

What I also love about ziplocks is that you can push the air out and they can act as a vacuum sealed bag and save a ton of space! I will put one days full outfit and jammies in one bag, push the air out, and label it. This is how I can easily pack 5 days of clothes, shoes, jackets, toiletries, etc. in a backpack with room to spare!

Extra Hack!

Keep a collapsable hamper or designate a corner for dirty clothes. At the end of the trip I just shove everything back into the bags that is dirty and keep one bag for clean clothes (there are usually very few.) Then when I get home I just separate everything into the laundry room and do laundry as usual. This saves me from trying to do laundry in a different place and refold clothes and get them back. I personally would rather do my laundry at home and put it away clean! Maybe try it!

5. Keep Entertainment and Snacks in it’s Own Small Bag

For road trips or trips out of town, I pack snacks and entertainment in its own small bag we keep up front with us. We recently (within the last year) have gotten rid of our tablets. They had become such a fight and I was tired of having to remember to download movies etc.

I decided to buy a portable dvd player on Amazon which I will link below and it’s been a game changer! I have bought some of my kids favorite movies but we also have thrifted a ton! Go check out your local thrift store and browse all of your favorite nostalgic childhood movies you can get for your kids at such a good price!

Keeping snacks, books, water bottles, the Yoto (such a good buy for kids, I’ll link it!), dvds and the dvd player etc. close by and separate from the clothes helps keep things organized even when traveling!

Final Thoughts

Packing light doesn’t mean being unprepared—it means packing with intention. Once you have a simple system and a reliable checklist, getting your kids ready for a trip becomes much faster and far less stressful. The goal isn’t to bring everything they own; it’s to bring exactly what they’ll need so your family can spend less time worrying about luggage and more time enjoying the vacation.
