3 Home Organization Systems You Need as a Mom (my sock method, coat organization, and shoe organization)
Life with 3 little boys is always chaotic. I feel like two of the main things I do in life is look for things and just try to keep everyone alive. I was so overwhelmed by the amount of laundry, toys, and crumbs. They were everywhere, all the time. And yet I could never find matching socks, both shoes, or a coat when we were rushing out the door. I knew I needed some home organization systems to save my sanity.
I created my sock method, coat organization, and shoe organization out of necessity. Getting out the door was so chaotic and hard, and I was exhausted with the amount of laundry and looking for things. I will link below all the things I’ve used to make these systems work!

My Sock Method
Everyone has a hard time keeping their socks matched. Keeping kids socks matched is so challenging. Keeping them matched and in a place you can find when you are already five minutes late is impossible. This frustration day after day led me to create my sock method. I gathered all of our kids’ socks that I could find and matched the ones that had matches and put them in a bag to donate. The ones that were loners got thrown away.
I got on Amazon and ordered new socks for each boy. I ordered one color sock for each kid. The oldest got grey, the middle got black, the youngest got white. No matching needed. Even if we lost one or they wore a hole in one it didn’t matter because they were all the exact same sock.
This was game changing on the laundry front but when we needed to get out the door; going upstairs or trying to have them go up (and not get distracted) was still an ouchy part of life. You can read how to make a method to get rid of some of the hard or “ouchy” parts of life here. I found a utensil holder with three compartments and each kid puts their color sock in their section. I then put this holder under our shoe organizer that I will talk about below and stuck it right by our garage door so we can grab socks and shoes right as we walk out the door!

My Shoe Organization
As I mentioned before with the socks driving me crazy, our shoes drove me crazy too. I felt like shoes were everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Finding the shoes that were the right ones for the occasion, in the right size, with both shoes matching was never a thing. Getting a shoe organizer where we could see all the boy’ shoes and if they had their match and separated by size has been so game changing.
We keep their socks right under their shoe organizer and keep both of these right by the garage door. It makes grabbing and going so much easier and helps us be 3 minutes late instead of the full 5. haha!

My Coat Organization
Jackets were in the same boat as the shoes and socks. We have an amazing coat closet my husband built but we were still struggling with what jacket to grab, the kids had a hard time getting them off the hangers, and put them back.
We decided to put coat hooks up in the area by our garage door and I thought maybe that would solve the problem but they still had a hard time getting them down or would run out the back door to play outside with no jacket at all. My solution to this problem was to put 3 command hooks on the window by the back door and a shoe mat underneath it.
We keep whatever coat is seasonally the best for just every day wear on these hooks for them to just grab when going outside or when we need to leave. We keep the ski coats and nicer jackets in the coat closet and it’s easy for me or my hubby to grab those on the rare occasions we need those instead.
The mat underneath to catch the shoes coming in and out from outside helps keep the floors cleaner and we can just put those away at the end of the day.

Why Simple Systems Work Better Than Perfect Organization
These systems, and others I have put in place are not picture or Pinterest perfect. The truth of it is, “perfect” organization is rarely sustainable. When we organize we often think or want it to look pretty; and it does for awhile, but then we get more things or the things we need there changes and it feels like we’ve failed.
Finding systems that actually work for you, your kids, your family and are sustainable will change your life. I tried and failed at the picture perfect house and pantry and closets. Don’t get me wrong, I love an organized space, and live by them but making the organization a system is when the magic happens.
This is why I started this blog. Not because I have it all figured out or live a perfect life in a spotless house. Because I hope the things I have tried and failed at and have worked new systems around can maybe help you!
Conclusion
When I simplified these everyday areas of our home, our mornings and evenings became so much calmer. These systems aren’t fancy — but they work. I truly believe setting up simple systems to make everyday things smoother will give you the capacity to do so much more in life and with your kids! I have set up systems for weightloss, mornings, evenings, and a lot of things in between because they make life so much easier and less overstimulating. Start small with one area (maybe socks, ha!) and see where the method and system bug takes you.
